Assignments!!!

Today is the day!!!!!! Today is the day we are going to hand in our assignment!!! Sadly, we were unable to print the most important part of our assignment which is the justification.... Our printer ink went dry half way printing the justification. This is the problem with our group that we always depend on one printer and the rest will be left without ink. We started to panic but later we decided that we will talk to our lecturer. Fortunately our lecturer is considerate that he allowed us to hand in the written form of the justification and email him the typed out version to him.

Technology saved us.

Besides making submission of assignments easier that we only need to upload them or email them to our lecturer, using technology in submission of assignments can help save our world. Less paper will be used to print out assignment means less tress will be cut down each year.. Imagine if all assignments need not be printed out, how much trees will be saved from being cut down to make paper?

Constructivism

Learning is an active, constructive process. The learner is an information constructor. People actively construct or create their own subjective representations of objective reality. New information is linked to prior knowledge, thus mental representations are subjective.

Learning is the compilation of complex knowledge structures. The learner must consciously think about trying to derive meaning, and through that effort, meaning is constructed through the knowledge structures.

Constructionism, a theory pioneered by Seymour Papert, holds that children learn best when they are in the active role of the designer and constructor. But the theory goes a step further. Constructionism, Papert says, adds "is the idea that this happens especially felicitously in a context where the learner is consciously engaged in constructing a public entity, whether it's a sand castle on the beach or a theory of the universe."

"But it is not only in the constructing of something that leaning becomes truly meaningful for the learner. That creation process and the end product must be shared with others in order for the full effects of Constructionist learning to take root. We all have times when we need to explain something we know to someone else. To do this, we may have to bone up on the subject, talk with others, draw diagrams. In this process, we learn our subject well because we have to think hard about it and think of the best ways to convey it to others. It is through this creation of an object -- ... it could be a website or computer program -- that is shared with others and becomes what Papert calls a "public entity" that Constructionist learning is so powerfully reinforced."

WOW!! Today we learned a lot of interactive activities during the maths hour..
we did power point presentation on a lot of activities that can be found in this website
These games are not only for fun and entertainment but to teach as well.. these games can be integrated in the teaching and learning of mathematics. They can be used for any stages in the lesson plan. They suits all the stages. In addition, we also learned about the disadvantages of certain games and how to upgrade it to get a better product. I love today's maths' class!! Teacher out there..Try these out!!

This is a good article and furthermore this website posts good resources for Mathematics teacher and learners..

It teaches about how to manipulate other forms of medium to teach mathematics..
children do not like things to be taught directly, they learn a lot indirectly and they love things like stories, songs, folktales..and so on.. this is a useful website wheree you cn integrate mathes in teaching and teach them mathematic in a fun way to learn..

Here is an example..

Use the tunes of these songs to make up other math songs. For instance:

Add two more it's five now

Maths Lessons

I wonder how much of all we had learnt in IPIK and UM will be useful in our future undertakings in school. Even when my five-year-old niece asked me some vague questions about Mathematics, I had difficulties telling her the answer. It has been ages since I left school and childhood. I wonder how to make them understand why 1+1=2 and not 11. Well, if you show them real objects, of course they will get it but how many times can one sit next to them and show them that one pen plus another equals to two.

We have learnt to use games, real objects, anything you name it BUT which is effectvie enough to get my message across? Let time decide and tell me. Not to believe totally in books but EXPRIENCE is my code now.

Today was our turn of presenting for this week..
Our task was to come out with an interactive mathematics activity using Microsoft Office..
We hardly understand the topic as we were not aware about what are the useful functions in Ms that can be used for Mathematics activity..
However, we end up planning for an interactive activity by introducing Smart Board and integrating the use of Smart Board.
We only planned for half an hour and thanx to Clarence that he typed out everything and did a 3 slide Power Point.
Since Josh agree to present it using Smart Board (as he's the best among us in dealing with that 'thing' -Smart Board..hehehe), Connie, Ling and I edited the power point slide..
Unfortunately, the Smart Board was not very smart today as it was not functioning today, but we manage to explain and let others understand what we wanted to carry out.
i realise as a teacher we should always be prepared if we face any obstacles. i also realised that technology is interesting to be incorporated in teaching but we have to bear in mind that if it doesn't work, then paper and pencil should always be there as a back-up!!

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CAUSES OF AT-RISK STUDENTS IN MATHEMATICS?

There are several variables that tend to cause students to fall into the at-risk groups in mathematics. Several of these causes can be prevented, reduced, or modified to help make students more successful in school and in mathematics in particular. Some students, especially minority students, are not able to see themselves and their backgrounds reflected in the curricula. The curriculum in many cases does not provide for cultural differences.
Females have tended to be especially at risk in many mathematics courses or classrooms because mathematics has frequently been viewed as a male domain. Instructional materials, family and peer behaviors and expectations, and teacher behaviors and expectations have frequently reinforced this attitude.

Some students develop anxieties that interfere with studying, learning, and using mathematics. These anxieties can interfere with learning and performance and cause the student to underperform and/or to elect to avoid mathematics courses and experiences.
Some students have not succeeded in mathematics classes due to learning and behavior problems, sensory handicaps, and physical and health impairments. These conditions do not need to limit the mathematical learning of these students. In many cases, mathematically related careers can provide these students with excellent employment opportunities.
Some school age youth are less likely to complete elementary and secondary school mathematics programs successfully and/or to acquire the skills necessary for higher education and employment because they are enrolled in classes where the curriculum and instruction are not appropriate to foster desired attitudes, aspirations, skills, and understandings related to mathematics. For many students the curriculum is neither interesting nor relevant; the very structure of the curriculum serves to "turn off" students. The mathematics curriculum often lacks real world problems and applications, is repetitious, and focuses too much on product and not on process.

Mathematics instruction also frequently suffers from at least five problems.

* the usual classroom routine is not effective for developing new concepts;
* the pace is wrong for many students;
* drill and practice are ineffective;
* diagnosis and treatment of error are often superficial; and
* instruction does not provide sufficient hands-on experiences.

Again we are stucked in the ComputerLab for 3 hours for Maths lecture... Sounds like a boring class but we get see many different Maths game that can be downloaded online!!

People nowadays are just creative, most of the games had never come across my mind... They are all interesting games that I am sure children will love them..

This is another new discovery after i had been in this course for 1 week!!

Teachers out there, go online, look for the suitable resources that can be used in classrooms and save some headache.... ENJOY!

Some people say calculator enables children to concentrate on understanding and studying mathematical concepts instead of spending time on tedious calculations. They say calculator helps develop number sense, and makes students more confident about their math abilities. What do you guys think? Calculators play a major role in Mathematics, but don't u think that we are relying too much on it.. i was startled when i saw a standard one year boy finding for calculator jus to find the sum for 372 + 459 =...
see how the children are spoilt...
but anyway i still respect the invention of calcualtor, it does help us a lot especially when we are having a heavy head and we need to count using our small tiny brain at that time right? well, don't burden the brain then..a calculator would be handy at that time..

In my opinion, calculator can be used in the teaching in a good way or a bad way - it all depends on the teacher's approach. Calculator in itself is not bad or good -- it is just a tool. It is used a lot in today's society, so students should learn to use it by the time they finish school.
At the same time, children SHOULD learn their basic facts, be able to do mental calculations, and master long division and other basic paper-pencil algorithms. Mathematics is a field of study that builds on previously established facts. A child that does not know basic multiplication (and division) facts will have hard time learning factoring, primes, fraction simplification and other fraction operations, distributive property, etc etc. Basic algorithms of arithmetic are a needful basis for understanding the corresponding operations with polynomials in algebra. Mastering long division precedes understanding how fractions correspond to the repeating infinite (non-terminating) decimals, which then paves way to understanding irrational numbers and real numbers. It all connects together!

What makes a maths teacher a good one? To me, I feel that the technology around us will help to arouse and capture the students' interests in Maths but accustomed to old school of thoughts, I still feel lots and lots of exercise is the key to grasp the concept..
